Design Your Business as a System
08 December 2010

Ask any amateur start-up entrepreneur what the purpose of their business is, and they'll probably give you a very short answer: to make money. Ask any successful businessperson the same question, however, and you'll be ready to stop listening long before the persons done talking.
Sure, the bottom line the profit margin is the reason most people get into business, but that's not the actual purpose of your business. Or at least it shouldn't be the sole purpose of your business.
Your business needs to operate as a system. Its designed to do quite a few things. Yes, they're all working together to inevitably make a profit. There's no getting around that. However, the business is also working to forge lasting and fruitful relationships, to up the value and recognition of your brand, and to carve out a permanent niche in the marketplace.
To correctly fire on all cylinders here, your business needs to operate like a step-by-step system before you even decide to put your first plans into action. Only the well-oiled machines do well in the long term in business, and the people trying to fly by the seat of their pants end up bankrupt and as someone else's customers.
The first thing to take into consideration here is the business itself. What are you going to offer to the public, and how can you offer it in a way that stands out from the competitors out there? How the steps work after this is contingent on whether or not you can bring a worthwhile product/service to the table.
Next, it's all about working on your business persona. How do you want to be seen by your customers? What do you want them to know about your product and your business brand? You have total control over the design process, so make sure you're coming across well to customers and giving them what they need.
A functioning, profiting business system is going to operate fluidly. So after you have the product and your direction mapped out, its time to put the steps in place to systematically profit and gain repeat customers.
Marketing should be as detail-oriented as the emphasis you put on your brand and the details you put into your product descriptions. Your system is marketing the product, bringing people to the site, selling them on the product, making it easy for them to purchase the product, and giving them a reason to come back.
You'll also need a good customer support service in this system. Customers need to feel important, and they want their needs addressed in a timely fashion. Part of your business system is to come across as compassionate and concerned to customers by always assisting them and even offering them promotions for their loyalty.Once the steps of your system are in place, it will operate on its own. You'll just have to keep a watchful eye over the entire operation and tweak the steps where needed to keep it running smoothly.
