Do You Need Training in Your Chosen Field?

03 November 2009

Do You Need Training in Your Chosen Field? When starting a new job, many people choose to forfeit any type of formal training and just “wing-it,” as it were. This may be a working approach, depending on the job, but it’s not very smart if you wish to make a career out of what you’re doing.

Most jobs, by and large, are easy enough to prepare for. Even some of the most advanced online techniques have training courses that are affordable and easy to follow. Choosing to participate in training could easily be the difference in success and failure.

In order to answer this all-important question, you can look at it in very simple terms: does what you’re planning to do require a skill - or a set of skills - that you haven’t acquired? The question itself is simple enough; the answer, on the other hand, will demand you layout your business plan, examining every conceivable aspect, and figure out what you know and what you need to learn.

For example, if you’ve chosen to break into some type of online career, say, auctioning, you will need to look at it from startup to finish. First and foremost, you will want to learn how the auction business works. Oh, you think you have an idea? Well, online auctions aren’t held by some fast-talking auctioneer and a haughty audience carrying bid paddles.

There are many trends to consider online, plus extremely thick competition that will determine your pricing options and marketing approach. Here is where some training would really come in handy.

With the necessary training, you will know how to compete in the marketplace. You will know what to sell and what to avoid. You will learn how to identify and target a niche market. Skills like web development will be a must - and these skills won’t require you to sit through long and expensive classes, but you will have to take some sort of course - even if it’s reading online literature.

The online auctioning business is just an example here. You can replace that specific with any career path you’ve chosen. The end result will always be the same: you will need training if you do not already have the necessary skill set.

If you’re looking to make a career out of this chosen field, then the more training you receive the better the results will be. Going into these things blindly is why most small and self-owned businesses fail. There’s a working formula of success, and if followed, a well-trained individual can succeed in any economy.

Not only is training for your particular field a good idea, but training in other areas related to business can only help your overall success. For example, are you any good with people? You may have learned how to market to people, playing on their wants and needs, but the “bedside manner” aspect of business, so to speak, is essential for repeat customers and lasting business relationships. It’s very common to receive some type of social training to acquire better people skills.

The lesson is simple: no matter what you’re going to do with your life, it’s better to know what you’re doing - looking before you leap, if you will. To that end, training is always necessary. The business world is unforgiving and has no room for on-the-job training.
