How to Make Setting Deadlines a Habit for Business Success

13 May 2010

How to Make Setting Deadlines a Habit for Business SuccessAlmost everyone who's ever had a job has been on a deadline before. You know the scenario the boss gave you until next Friday to complete the project, and it's Wednesday night and you're far from done. What do you do? You kick it into overdrive and haul tail until the project is completed. Having a deadline makes it real. Your livelihood depends on that deadline.

Although it's much easier said than done, setting deadlines for yourself in your business is part of a successful recipe that will help you succeed in nearly any marketplace. Even if the deadline is only imagined for effect, you can still get in the habit of working on a tight schedule and seeing that you always finish a task on time.

The idea behind setting these deadlines for yourself is to make sure you're already ahead of the curve when it comes to business decisions and even market fluctuations. You'll never be unable to catch up, simply because you'll always be one deadline away from a project's completion.

One of the best parts about making deadlines a habit is that you do not have to wait to start putting yourself on a deadline. You can start before the business even gets rolling. How about giving yourself one week to find the right combination of keywords for your product and research that particular niche market?

From there, you can set another deadline for site creation, marketing strategies, and everything else involved with setting up your business. By getting a start working under the gun, doing quick and efficient work will become commonplace.

Of course, there are some things to consider here. The first possible downside being that, obviously, you do not want to rush completion of a task too much, or else you might find that the finished product is lackluster. The idea behind the deadline is just to light a fire under your soles and to get you going in the right direction.

Another downside to deadlines is that a deadline is only as good as the person working to it. If you're not serious about sticking to every deadline you set, then there's really no reason to start in trying to make it a habit.

How would you make it a habit? Well, that comes through success. Think about weight loss once you lose your first five pounds, you're ready to keep going. It's basically the same with deadlines. Once you meet your first deadline and like the work and see that it's a successful formula, you'll want to stick to deadlines in the future.

What about the unforeseen circumstances? You'll always run into things out of your control that keep you from working. This could cause you to miss one or multiple deadlines. You turn this into success by keeping with the practice and picking up where you left off. Life will always happen. There's no way around it. But sticking with deadlines will equal success more often than not.
